Tate-ochi is a Japanese term that refers to vertical lines you find on vintage denim, which are the result of slubs (the industry term for thickenings in yarn).
The result is that the indigo fades the most where the yarn is thickest. And when the thickenings are stretched longer, you get the tate-ochi fades.
